Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knows why SumOfSines sounds different to an OscillatorBank being fed by a SpectrumInRam, even when the analysis files are identical and all other settings are matched? There is a distinct difference to my ears, but since OscillatorBank is using a sine wavetable (in this case), shouldn't the two prototypes sound the same? IP: Logged |

Could you upload the two Sounds here for comparison? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Cool! How do I upload the spectrum files, they are 2 * 1.8 mb? Should I email them across? Cheers, Jack IP: Logged |

Email would be fine, thanks! IP: Logged |

The only difference I could see was that you used Default as the number of partials in the SpectrumInRAM. The SpectrumLogToLinear is not necessary. In which octave did you notice a difference between the two? Thanks! p.s. love the beating wings effect! [This message has been edited by SSC (edited 11 November 2013).] IP: Logged |

Hi SSC, Thanks! I can hear more 'percussiveness' in the SumOfSines example, the rapid flurries are more clearly defined (especially in the octaves above middle C). In the OscillatorBank version the sound is slightly more washy, to my ears. Strange Not a problem though, was just curious! Since you used Default as the number of partials in the SpectrumInRAM, the frame update rate on that one is once every 256 samples (the number of partials in your analysis). In the SOS, you said to use only the first 128 partials, so the frame update rate is one per 128 samples. The difference in amplitude envelope update rates could explain the SOS sounding more "percussive". IP: Logged |

Hi, When you mentioned this in the previous post I thought you'd hit the nail on the head, but even after I changed both sounds to 128 partials and removed the LogToLinear, I could still hear a subtle difference. Maybe my ears are playing tricks on me! I'll send you guys some A/B audio files to see if you can hear the difference Jack IP: Logged |
