I'm experiencing a lot of stuck MIDI notes in Kyma. I'm using a Capybara 320 with Kyma 6.90f1. I'm currently using either Reaper and Pro Tools to supply the MIDI data. I've tried deleting all CC info and it's still happening. Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Timothy

What MIDI interface are you using? How long is the MIDI cable?

Thank you for your prompt response.

I'm using an Avid 003R and the MIDI cable is less than one meter.

What's different between this case and other times when it was working without stuck notes? Anything different about the setup?
Do you get the same behavior when you send MIDI directly from a keyboard to the MIDI input on the Capybara (without other software and without the MIDI interface)?

Do you have another MIDI cable you could try?

DSP.zip

I'm using the system in my semi-portable setup where I don't have a keyboard attached. The only thing I'm doing differently is that in the past all of my 'sounds' were always one voice and not polyphonic. Ever since I've started using the MIDIVoice module and setting the polyphony to something higher, in this case 5 voices, is where I run into hung notes. I don't have any problems with a polyphony setting of 2 so I'm wondering if it's a DSP issue. I've attached a zipped .jpg of a screenshot of my DSP usage from when I'm using 5 voices. The issue also happens with a different MIDI cable, so I suspect that isn't the problem.

If you are getting an Out of Real Time message, then yes, it could be the cause of stuck notes.

No I'm not, that was just a guess due to the fact that I don't get them when I reduce the polyphony setting.

I've tried removing any overlapping notes, so obviously the sound could play without the MIDIVoice module, but I still am getting stuck notes. It sometimes takes a minute or so in loop mode on my sequencer, but they always come back.

I'm trying to finish an instructional Kyma video & this problem is hanging me up & keeping it from completion... no pun intended.

I'll keep troubleshooting in the meantime. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hello again,

I've been studying this problem & here is what I've found:

#1 I'm attaching two audio files from Pro Tools which were recorded from Kyma's output. The first one sounds like what I get when I trigger my sound with MIDI note #0, which is isn't in my sequence. The second note is MIDI note #56 which is also not in my sequence.

#2 Also, the MIDI notes off command isn't muting the hung notes, I just get a glitchy sound when I issue the command.

Its been a long time now so my memory on this is a bit foggy. I recall having a similar issue with the Capybara where it suffered erratic MIDI behavior, including stuck notes. Eventually what I discovered was that the MIDI output driving the Capybara was electrically marginal. Under certain conditions of MIDI timing messages were corrupted.

The fix was changing the MIDI interface.

Why would this only show up when using a polyphonic sound? One theory is that since the voice allocator works on a most-recently-played basis it always plays the current note, and it always extinguishes the prior note. So missed note-offs are never an issue.

The fact that you are seeing unexpected MIDI note pitch values lends further credence that the problem is one of data corruption.

My suggestion is try a different MIDI interface on your computer if you have one available. I'd also suggest swapping MIDI cables for a different brand if you have one but that was already suggested.

Thanks for your help Doug. I'll try another cable but unfortunately I only have one MIDI interface which, until now, has served all of my needs & I'm currently not in the position to be able to purchase a new one. Maybe I can borrow or rent one from a friend who works in a music shop in town.
