![]() ![]() ![]() Hi, I'm asking for experiences that Kyma users have had with inexpensive PC laptops as the host for Kyma while using the Wacom Intuos3 tablet. I have a Thinkpad T23 and have had a lot of problems with the Wacom driver (many versions) and I'm beginning to think it might be hardware incompatibility. Kurt and Carla have tried to fix the problem with software updates, but it still is not fixed. I want to use the tablet live with Kyma so it needs to be very reliable, which it totally isn't right now on my system. If you have any suggestions for a reliable PC laptop model, please let me know. Thank you very much. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Have you tried a PCMCIA usb card? Perhaps your chipset has a bug that cause interuption of the data flow. Many computers show this bug according to Line6. The use of PCMCIA card is the solution they recommand. The result is not 100% sure but the card will cost only 30$usd. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi KS, Thanks for the idea. I'm using the PCMCIA slot for a firewire card to connect to the Capybara. I did try a combination firewire + USB card but the Kyma software did not recognize the firewire connection. The firewire connection worked in other software, just not the Kyma. And the USB worked, too. But without being able to connect to the Caypbara via the firewire part of the PCMCIA combo card, I was not able to see if the PCMCIA USB connection worked any better in Kyma than with the USB connection on the motherboard. Unfortunately the cards I tried were too thick to allow 2 cards in the 2 slots at the same time. Thank you very much for suggestion. -Jim IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() What combo card did you try? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi KX, I don't remember what brand the combo card was. It was at least 6 months ago and when it didn't work, I immediately returned it. In the past few days, I have tried my Kyma on 2 additional Thinkpads with the same results. I tried an X22 which is a 800MHz P3 with 256 mb ram in Win XP and a R40, a 1.9GHz P4-M with 512 mb ram in Win XP. The pen crashes in these just the same as with my T23. In fact, the R40 crashed in about 30 seconds. The R40 has a built-in, on the motherboard firewire connection (as well as on-board USB 2.0) so with this configuration, no PCMCIA cards were used. This seems to me to eliminate the PCMCIA card as the probem. It does not, however eliminate the on-board USB connection. I'm going to try to test that next. Thanks! IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Problems started when I installed driver 498-3. Going back to 485_6 was the solution in my setup. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi KX, I've tried all the drivers I can find. Here's the list and the results that I've experienced: with Kyma x.3 6.30 pc480-6 crashed about the same as 485 For me 480 and 485 have worked the best. Thanks again. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() We have recently uncovered problems with the newer Wacom drivers for Windows XP. Please see http://www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Know/WacomProblemsOnWinXP for instructions on how to set up the most recent working drivers while we work with Wacom to correct this problem. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for the posting regarding the newer Wacom drivers. Just to report what I've tried lately, at KX's suggestion I tried another USB/Firewire combo PCMCIA card. This time it was an Adaptec AUA-1422. In Win XP on my T23 I could not get the computer to activate the USB ports. Consequently, I didn't even bother testing the firewire ports. I tried the newest version of Kyma on my desktop an AMD 2800 Win 2000 with 512 ram and it worked great with the wacom pen - tablet driver 491.2. I worked with it for about half an hour and not a single driver crash. So I thought I'd try Win 2000 on the Thinkpad. Long story short, Kyma won't run on the Thinkpad 23 in Win 2000. The Kyma software starts up, draws most of the windows, says "Kyma" and then the machine freezes. Tablet or no. So I guess the Thinkpad is about history for this application. Too bad, its a nice computer. Kinda reminds me of my NeXT slab, black, and square, just way more portable IP: Logged |
