We are commencing beta testing of a new software product for Paca(rana) Kyma systems that addresses some of the challenges of networking a Paca(rana) within your overall set up. Sometimes a full network set up, or integrating your Paca(rana) into your overall network, is just not practical. One example would be using a Mac Book or Mac Book Pro on stage, but it can also arise even in the studio when your studio computer connects to the overall network over WiFi. One solution is to purchase a special USB WiFi adaptor such as the one recommended by Symbolic Sound. But that seems wasteful when you already have a spare Ethernet port on you Mac, or you prefer the robustness of a wired connection over a wireless one.

Our new OSX application transforms your Mac into a "communications nerve center" for your Paca(rana). A key feature is its "PacaProxy" that makes OSC services provided by your Paca(rana) available to any network connected to your Mac. This means that on-stage networking can be set up with nothing more than your Mac Book or Mac Book Pro, your Paca(rana) direct cabled into your laptop's Ethernet port, and The Mac's built-in Airport. Use this "computer-to-computer network" (ad-hoc) low latency, "private" WiFi connection for your WiFi remote OSC controllers, like our vKi or vKiP controllers, or products like TouchOsc. No need for routers, WiFi access points, or USB WiFi "dongles".

The application also addresses the same challenges that our PacaMidi application solves: full Paca(rana) MIDI connectivity. It includes dual external MIDI I/O, plus the versatile Paca(rana) virtual MIDI port for all your software needs.

This is a great on-stage solution but its also handy in your studio. Now a Mac Pro set up can directly connect the Paca(rana) to one Ethernet port while the other is used for general networking. This may well "save the day" when your router is out of ports, or cabling to it is impractical. Does your Mac Pro also have Airport? If so you can also use that to set up an ad-hoc WiFi network just for your OSC controllers. Likewise an iMac set up that use its Airport to connects to the overall network can now simply connect the Paca(rana) directly to the iMac's Ethernet port. Even if your Paca(rana) is already fully connected to your network this application can be useful if you wish to add a dedicated WiFi network for wireless OSC control using the Mac's "spare" Airport.

Here are the application's requirements:

1. Intel Mac running OSX 10.5.8 or 10.6.x; G5 Mac running OSX 10.5.8. Note that this Mac need not be the same one with a FireWire connection to your Paca(rana) (where you run Kyma). So for example if you normally use an up-to-date Windows system for Kyma but have an older Mac lying about you can use that Mac for PacaConnect and continue using your Windows setup for Kyma.

2. The Mac must have at least two active networking ports. This can be two Ethernet ports, or an Ethernet and an internal Airport.

3. Processing and memory requirements are very modest so older Intel or G5 Macs do the job. Part of our internal tests use a seven year old 2GHz G5 PowerMac.

4. If you wish to use the included external MIDI device support you need MIDI ports connected to the Mac for each device.

If your set up meets these requirements and you would like to participate in beta testing send us an email at beta@delora.com. Include your full name and the email address you would like your beta license issued under.

All the best,

Doug
