Hello All,

I KNOW I'm overlooking some simple step but, thus far, I haven't been able to configure TouchOSC (on an iPad) to work with Kyma.

So as not to make this first post eye-glazingly long with all the variations I've tried, let me start with the fact that I'm trying to bind together the following:

1. A Pacarana
2. Kyma running on a MacBook Pro
3. TouchOSC running on an iPad
4. An Airport Express serving as the wireless router

Among the variations I've attempted:
1. Creating a unique network with the Airport Express
2. Using the Airport Express to extend my already-existing home network
3. Directly connecting the Pacarana to the MacBook Pro via ethernet

There are, of course, endless variables in each of these configurations but I suspect it's something I'm doing — or not doing — with respect to the Network and Sharing preferences on the Mac.

Additionally:

a. I should mention that I HAVE had success in getting TouchOSC to communicate via OSCulator.
b. I am running Kyma 6.75 and Mac OS X 10.6.4

Any thoughts on where to start?

Many thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob!

Variant number 2 ought to work (extending your existing home network). What are you using for the existing network? Is it another Airport Express or a different router (if so what's the name of that other router?)

Thanks!

Well, let's see now. . .

The primary router is an Apple Time Machine (in the kitchen) connected directly to a cable modem. That's where the home network originates.

In the studio I had the Pacarana connected to an Airport Express (via ethernet) which had "joined" the primary network.

Does that answer your question?

I'll reconfigure the above set-up in case you have any suggestions. . .

Best,
Bob

I have no idea what I did differently but it works! I know you did something telepathically and I truly appreciate it!

BTW, is there a way to use my Airport Express in creating a "personal" network? I'm thinking it would be nice, when on the road, to not be at the mercy of the local wi-fi network. . .

Bob

Hi Robert,

Perhaps it would be best to connect your iPad to your Mac is to bypass the base station (Airport Express), and connect them directly via a ad-hoc network (one that is created on your Mac. This FAQ ( http://osculator.net/doc/faq:iphone#iphone_ipad_faq ) might be of interest for you.

Also, if you are ready to jailbreak your iPad (which is as of today something you can do legally), you can connect your iPad with a USB cable and get rid of the problems that a wireless connection induces. This is fairly simple to do, just follow the steps described here: http://www.osculator.net/2010/07/19/osc-and-ipad-on-a-usb-connection/ .

Best,
Cam

Thanks Cam!

Regarding your instructions:

Check that Airport is turned on, and select “Create Network”.
Give a name to this network.

Is there any way to put the Mac into Bridge mode? (Or some other way to allow devices on the Airport network to see devices on the Ethernet network?)

BridgeMode.zip

Hi Robert,
I would connect the Pacarana directly to your Time Capsule (TC), if possible, and use the Airport Express (AX) for the iPad. If DHCP is being furnished by your cable modem, you need to have both the TC and AX in bridge mode (see attached .zip).

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)

Update to save changes and let the TC and AX restart.

@SSC:

By default, even if you create a network on your Mac, the two interfaces are bridged, but use a self-assigned address.

However, if you want to retain your Internet connection from Airport, and have the Pacarana on the same network, then you need to connect the Pacarana's Ethernet cable to an outlet on your base station.

Another option is to plug the Pacarana on the Ethernet port of your Mac, and have a software, like OSCulator do the bridging for you.

There might be a way to bridge the Ethernet port and let it act like a virtual switch, but I wonder if Bonjour would still work.

When you create an Airport network using your Macintosh, it does not appear that Bonjour makes services published on one network visible on the other.

But as Cam points out, you can use OSCulator to send the OSC messages from TouchOSC to Kyma (over FireWire).

You folks are truly amazing! Thank you SO much for taking the time to assist me. I now have a much clearer picture of why I was running into (seemingly) inexplicable problems and what variables I must take into consideration.

For now, as I'm working on developing some TouchOSC interfaces in my studio, I'll be defaulting to using my Airport Express as an extension to my home network Time Capsule (which is in another room). A bit later on though, I'll be trying some of your suggestions to create alternate configurations for use "on the road." I'll be sure to report back on my trials and tribulations!

With much appreciation,
Bob Ponto
