Author | Topic: Anyone using Kyma on their main DAW? |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi, I've been using my Capy 320 on a souped up Beige G3 sync'd to my main G4 based ProTools Rig. I've just ordered a Flame and Kyma X upgrade and I'm thinking that I'd like to try and run Kyma on this G4 machine for the better performance etc. I know most of us don't have Kyma X yet (of U lucky beta testers!!! lol ) but does anyone else run Kyma on there main DAW computer? And if so, is there any issues or things I should look out for? BTW: I run a PT Mix system, mainly with PT6.1, live and Reason. And sometimes using DP and Logic as the front end for the Digi hardware. Thanks in advance. Al. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() i run kyma on my main computer (dual 1ghz G4 MDD/windtunnel).. but i don't integrate it in real time with my DAW (digital performer).. but they DO run at the same time... because of Kyma's inability to run on a computer with more than 1gig of RAM i open up digital performer first, so it eats up a bunch of RAM, then open Kyma. it was more convenient for me to run Kyma on my main computer because my audio firewire drive where i store my sound design work is hooked up to this computer. it was a pain to create sounds in kyma on another computer and then transfer them to my main computer for use in Digital Performer. i hope that eventually with Kyma X we'll see some sort of plug in (audio unit) support. keep in mind that running kyma on a faster computer doens't necessarily give you better performance... that what' the Capy is for... although, i'm sure there are elements of Kyma that benefit from a faster computer (maybe carla can shed some light on this) such as screen redrawing, etc. is your concern about running kyma on your main DAW computer one of stability? or convenience? i guess i would ask, why not run it on your main computer? -taylor

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi Taylor, Thanks for the reply. My reasoning is totally one of ease of access really. At the moment it's (kyma) on the other side of the studio from ProTools (the only free space for it) and I'm just not happy that I'm integrating Kyma enough into my work. I hope that when I run Kyma X under OSX I can just have it sit on one monitor of the Mac with Audio routed via sp/dif in/out of 'Tools. Carla, Does Kyma X use Core Midi, or does it access the Capy Midi ports completely natively like under OS9 etc? Thanks, IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() "Does Kyma X use Core Midi, or does it access the Capy Midi ports completely natively like under OS9 etc? If it doesn't see Core Midi devices then maybe its something to consider in the future" No, not at this point--there are some timing advantages to sticking with the hardware MIDI inputs on the Capy. But it is something we are considering for a future update because it would be so convenient. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I am glad to hear this dialog. I recently wrote Symbolic Sound asking about support specifically allowing the Capy to be used independant of the Kyma software. The reply was encouraging. After the first release of the new Kyma software they will be looking at getting some kind of independant OS X support. My desire is to use the Capy as my front end for A to D recording. Although I have a Pro Tools Mix Plus I would like to use the Capy as the front for Logic and Nuendo. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() When the Capybara is CoreMIDI and CoreAudio compatible, i.e. the I/Os usable by other apps, I'd would take the opportunity to expand to 8 I/Os from the 4 I currently have and also use it as a front end to my Digital Performer/TiG4 laptop rig. Eddy Martinez IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() quote: me too ... (and ain't that sucker LOUD ... I finally resorted to drilling a hole in the floor and running cables down to the basement ... and while I was at it I put my Capy down there too ... talk about a huge improvement in noise floor and psychological well-being!) but I DO successfully use realtime integration with DP3 IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I used the old ASIO driver quite a bit in Logic about 2 yrs ago - it was fab - such a great way to work to have the I/O accessible for rec/PB, and also the be able to run Kyma algorithms in the timeline at the same time - just great. I must say, that since the ASIO drive stopped working (some time ago now) I have used Kyma/Capy seperately, and just focused on it as my main tool, but integrations would widen the scope, which I think is a great way to go. Of course, I am yet to discover all the new goodies in Kyma X, so imagine I shall be quite for a while after it arrives IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Kyma is central to my DAW setup - Based on Logic Audio. Kyma and Logic run on the same machine. My other digital equipment (Yamaha O2R and MOTU 1224) is slaved to the Capybara clock. Using the O2R auxes, together with a suitable TimeLine sound - I can send Audio track data from the DAW into multiple Kyma effects/processes. I'm looking forward to see how Kyma.X will develop this coupling further - Kyma.AudioUnits, as inserts in the DAW - will be an exciting development! As it will negate having to out from the DAW via the O2R into Kyma and back into it. Andrew [This message has been edited by photonal (edited 26 September 2003).] IP: Logged |
