Hi,

I recently acquired a Pacarana and have been setting it up today. Pacarana gets up to 65 degrees celcius from a cold start in a few minutes (less than 15 minutes) all whilst under no DSP load, after an hour of idling the fans are going crazy and the case is hot to the touch. The Pacarana is by fan the noisiest device in my room now (previously the title was held by my 2009 MacPro). Is this normal?

(The ambient temperature in my room today has been around 22c)

Have you left space for airflow above the Pacarana? Is it on a surface that can act as a heat sink (rather than an insulator)? For example, cardboard is a very good insulator and would not act to absorb heat from the metal case.

65 C is an allowable temperature (it will automatically shut itself off if it gets hotter than that so you do not have to worry about the processor overheating).

I had the Pacarana on shelf by its self and jacked up an inch or so on some metal brackets I had around to try and get airflow underneath the unit!

I appreciate that the Pacarana fights to keep the DSP chips at 65c by controlling the fan speed and beyond that it will automatically shutdown, but it seems to me quite extreme that the fans are running so fast and loud when idling and in what must be a pretty typical environment (a project studio with a comfortable room temperature).

It is the volume of noise from the fans that is my main concern, they are loud to the point of distraction

It is better to have the Pacarana resting flat on a surface so the entire bottom of the case is in contact with the shelf. On the top (where the vents are located) it is important to have an air gap to allow airflow from the vents and fans.

The fan controllers operate best when Kyma is running so it is best not to leave it in "idle" state when turned on.

It should be rare for the fans to run at full speed. So there is some possibility that one of your fans is faulty and the others are running full speed to compensate. Please contact Symbolic Sound by email so we can give you some tests to run.

Thanks.

Thanks,

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to spare on this right now, but I did start up the Pacarana and Kyma X for about 30 mins earlier and with no Sounds loaded the temps were much lower, although loading some Sounds form the library this soon jumped to 64 C, the ambient temperature was 2 or 3 degrees cooler today.

Once I have spent a bit more time with the Pacarana I may email to see about running some tests.

I have noticed one of the fans sounds a little different to the others, and I have noted that the person I bought Pacarana from has asked a question on this forum about it. Something I didn't notice when purchasing it...
