Do you have any suggestions for the order of Firewire devices on the bus? I have an iBook, Flame, MOTU 828 (audio & MIDI I/O), and a big hard drive.

I always put the Flame first, and then a couple of hard drives, and all seems fine.

On a slightly different point. I am wondering if it is alright to unplu and replug the Flame from the powerbook when the Flame is turned on? I ask because I have set up the Flame andf HD's some distance from the PB, and have the Capy and Flame on all the time, so just plug in the Flame when I am doing Capy things - it's convenient, but I wanted to ask if this is good practice ot not? Thanks

In theory, any order should be fine. There may be some advantage to placing the disk first in the chain (if you are reading/writing audio to the disk).
It is OK to plug/unplug the FireWire connection while both the PB and the Flame are turned on but *not* while Kyma is running.

If you don't reconnect within 2 seconds, the host computer will log-off the Flame from the network and Kyma would not be able to find the Capybara anymore (until Kyma is restarted).

Is this what's happening then with my computer when running Kyma on Win98SE? Occasionally Kyma loses connection with the Capybara and the computer has to be restarted to get the program running again. If I just restart Kyma without rebooting the computer I don't get any joy, and therefore I have thought that this intermittent problem is connected with the windows platform losing connection with the flame.

We don't recommend using FireWire under Windows 98. Microsoft didn't include full FW support until Windows ME. (They tried to retrofit 98 to support FW but it has always been a bit "iffy")
