Hi all!
I heared that Kyma running on PCs has a much faster GUI. Is this true? For example opening a large folder in the sound browser sometimes takes for ever. I´m thinking of switching to PC.

frank.

I'm using a PC - a 500 MH Pentium III - and have no problem with the browser opening. All of Kyma's windows are a little sluggish and funky to repaint because of the antiquated Smalltalk base - which might actually be better working on a Mac, as it was a retro fit for Wintel.

There is a problem with the Timeline window in that it is so slow to resize (can take over 4 minutes) that I can't use it. But I am assured that mine is the only Wintel system in the Universe that has that problem.

I am running a PentII 350MHz (BX chipset w/100MHz FSB) w/64MB RAM and have not seen this timline problem. However, the Sound Browser window is sometime slow to open on large directories (probably related to my minimal amount of RAM. I will be upgrading soon).

This is quite amusing. I was under the impression that the PC version was the odd one and was seriously considering switching to Mac.

I haven't studied this closely, but it seems that Kyma (PC) is running on a virtual machine which explains the speed and the "custom-made" dialogboxes and what-have-we.

My PC is a PII 450, an ok asus motherboard (can't remember which one), 128 mb ram, an old pci graphics card, a wide-scsi HD. If I should pinpoint one thing that is annoyingly slow, it's when Kyma searches for the floppydrive. I haven't used the timeline that extensive yet so I wouldn't know about that.

I believe it could run MUCH faster if written in c++, but it takes too much time rewriting it relative to what is gained, supposedly.

We've already gotten started on a large project that should result in substantial speed-ups on both platforms for Kyma 6.0.

yours in the perpetual pursuit of the faster-better-cheaper grail,
