-----
Invitation
Symbolic Sound and Station 55 invite you to share your ideas, experiences and art with fellow practitioners at the First Kyma Symposium by submitting proposals for presentations, demos, tutorials, sound installations, and performances. Most of all, you are invited to become involved by attending the symposium and interacting with your fellow Kyma practitioners!

The First International Kyma Symposium is scheduled for 8-11 October 2009 in the vibrant Poble Nou neighborhood of Barcelona during the annual LEM festival (<http://www.gracia-territori.com/index.htm>http://www.gracia-territori.com/index.htm). The preliminary program includes master classes presented by the creators of Kyma, papers and demos presented by Kyma practitioners, and a program of concerts, installations and performances in and around the Niu art space of Poble Nou, on the east side of the city. You are invited to learn, to share, to meet, and to enjoy!

How can you participate?
There are many ways you could participate (and we hope you will choose more than one of them!). You could propose:
* A lecture/demo on a specific aspect of how you are using Kyma in your work
* A live performance of a musical work that uses Kyma
* A site-specific sound installation utilizing Kyma
* A topic for a master class or tutorial that you would like to attend (or present)

Here are some other ways you could participate. You could propose to:
* Live blog or microblog from the symposium so that even those who cannot attend can still participate in the symposium
* Write a report on the symposium for a magazine or journal
* Document the events in photos on Flickr

We welcome your input and ideas on further ways to make this symposium even more memorable, fun, and useful for everyone.

A few topic suggestions
Possible topics include (but are not limited to): live performance models, Smalltalk & CapyTalk, alternative controllers, sound design, deconstructions of specific pieces or live interactive setups, morphing, deconstruction of a sound installation, collaborating with choreographers, music in art galleries, sound for picture, speech and hearing science research, live improvisation setups, improvising over networks, sound for games, data sonification, brainstorming on the future of music and sound art.

Live music proposals can include: 5.1 surround, audio/visual interaction, site specific sound installations

How to submit proposals:
* Live music performances (with or without beats, with or without visuals or other performers)
* Topics you'd like to see covered and questions you'd like to see addressed in the master classes
* 30 minute Lecture/demos
* Site-specific installations
* Other proposals to enhance the information exchange and spread the knowledge before, during and after the symposium

BEFORE AUGUST 1 2009 to the following email address:

symposiumProposals2009@symbolicsound.com

Please include:
1. Title
2. Name(s) of presenter(s)
3. Duration
4. ALL technical requirements including what you could bring, what you would need, & how much setup time/tech rehearsal would be required
5. An abstract clearly stating the topic (or describing the artistic work), including how Kyma is employed in this work, and how the presentation would be interesting/useful for other Kyma practitioners.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Very cool! I don't know if I'm going to be able to be there, but I'll try - I'd love to go.

very exciting!

my proposal is an edit to the tittle of the symposium to :

The First Annual International Kyma Symposium - as it seems like such a good idea that it would be great if it could be a regular event giving users the opportunity to find out how projects and subjects develop as well as new ideas and material to be shared.

Some info on hotels and travel (thanks to Cristian Vogel):

There is a brand new Ibis hotel around the 70-80 euro mark for a double room about a 1 minute walk from NIU.

There is the Hotel Pere IV, about 5 minutes walking from NIU, which is also 70-80 per night. (And there are plenty more options hotels in the area from 100 euros upwards).

In October, you can still often enjoy a sunny morning on the beach, yet because it is out of season, there should be some deals to be had on rooms.

Flights - EasyJet fly to Barcelona from Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Berlin, Geneva and all London airports. ( can be less than 100 euros both ways if booked in advance )

Train from Madrid is the new AVE, high speed connection. Like the plane, this is less expensive if booked early.

Just a reminder that the deadline for proposals is the end of July (in other words, THIS FRIDAY).

Everyone is invited to attend the symposium (you don't have to submit a proposal in order to attend...On the other hand, you will probably have a lot more fun if you do(!))

Since it is a meeting of Kyma practitioners, anyone who presents a performance or installation will also be asked to present a lecture/demo on how they've used Kyma in the work. The idea is to create a symposium where we can be inspired by and learn from each other's work, and it is a situation in which you can talk about how you use Kyma secure in the knowledge that your audience can understand and appreciate the technical details.

Several people have asked this question by email so in case others have been wondering the same thing: If you would like to submit a proposal but are unsure at this point whether it will be possible for you to attend, it is better to go ahead and submit a proposal (once your proposal has been accepted, you can make the final decision on whether or not you can attend).

Some people reported problems registering, but Cristian has sorted that out now, so please feel free to give it another shot. Here's the link: Kyma Symposium

The deadline for early registration has been extended through the end of September (after the end of September, the cost for registration changes from 80 euros to 100 euros). Also, enrollment is limited to 30 people due to the size of the venue, so if you'd like to come, please register early to ensure yourself a slot. Thanks!

Yes please, video would be amazing, even if it's informally taken.

I wish you great success with this symposium and hope to join next year.
