Thought it might be fun to see whether we could synthesize the sound of fire. Here is a first attempt using grain clouds and noise. Maybe we could brainstorm on this and improve upon it (and save ourselves some scorched microphones).

Hello,

I realized that the way one think of the sound of fire, and to a larger extent every sounds, differs from one person to another. Before listening to you sound, I thought more of the "windy" sound of fire, instead of the crackling sound which reminds me a fire made of wood rather than gaz or oil.

In the given example, the crackling sound is rather good. I find it especially good when the frequency is down so that we can hear some kind of explosions. Some might say it sounds too synthetic, but I think this is what is funny.

When searching on Google about the sound of fire, I found a document that could help : http://eg04.inrialpes.fr/Programme/Papers/PDF/paper1260.pdf

I'll try to experiment things on the "windy" part of the sound of fire which, IMHO, can be improved in the current version.

It's quite interesting that you imagined or remembered a different sound of fire (goes along with this earlier discussion: http://www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Share/ImagineObserveRememberDiscussion).

After reading this article, I think I find definitely more interesting to modelize after remembrance than scientific statements. Though synthesis could be considered as a science, I am not convinced that we are in the fields of alchemy ...

Hi
It's curious how two opposite elements in the Nature are so close in synthesis...

I wonder if it is because the snapping of a fire is caused by water turning to steam and exploding the wood? (http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae642.cfm). So they are really not so opposite after all?

I suspect that the uniform random trigger pattern also has something to do with the similarity.

Maybe the sound of a droplet exploding when it hits the roof of a car is similar to the sound of a drop of water exploding because it is superheated?

I am reminded of when I first got Kyma, and my favourite past time for a year or so was trying to create running water using the Granular Classic Sound....

Here are my contributions: a selection of wet or hot moments. I've included a few more crackles and also varied the noise element.
