i wonder if there´s anybody here who has some insight in the work of the group of composers called "the spectralists" from france. founders are gerard grisey and tristan murail. they rely heavily on tools developed at ircam which they also influenced very much ("open music" or "patchwork").
two weeks ago i joined a seminar class with murail at columbia, ny, and that made me think a lot about composing music based on spectral harmonics. (i asked murail if he knows kyma and he did not. of course i gave him the internet-link... )
I think most of us - particularly me - thinks of spectral synthesis as a kind of effect inside rather traditional esthetics. that a spectral analysis can be the basis for the harmonic system and the construction of a musical piece wasn´t really clear in my mind.
what murail is doing that he analysis complex sounds like waves or bells and computes harmonics which are then translated into scores for acoustic instruments, preferably harmonic poor ones like woodwinds.
Is there somebody out there who studied that school and is willing to tell us something about it? Of course i would be interested also in experiences in spectral composing with kyma versus open music.
i also see big big potential for the aggregat synthesis in this field. currently i´m developing and sorting ideas ...
