As of today I can't get any disk-based samples to play back without stuttering and skipping like a stuck record. Soon the sound samples or examples that include samples will stop, and the Capy needs a DSP init to get going again. Telling samples to use RAM works fine, however.

All was well until I killed WinME and reinstalled good ol' (?) Windows98 from scratch and reinstalled Kyma 5.0.x, putting 5.0.8 over the top of it. In all other ways the system seems fine. Hard drives are configured seemingly ok, no IRQ or other conflicts that I can see. I've reinstalled Kyma a few times trying to debug this one. I'm just about dead in the water again. Sheesh.

Make sure DMA disk access is enabled in control panel/system/device manager/disk drives/ide disk/settings...reboot after checking the DMA box.

If this doesn't fix the problem, or DMA is already enabled, check to see what disk is being used for virtual memory (the windows swap file). You can find this setting under control panel/system/performance/virtual memory/hard disk...it will probably be greyed out...make sure it points to a drive other than the one you store your samples on (if possible).

Hope this helps,

MM

Disk stuttering is a symptom of a capybara.exe driver that is not matched with the version of Kyma you have installed.

Most likely you are using Kyma 5.08 with a an older capybara.exe file. Try downloading the update from the support page, and then replace the capybara.exe file in /windows/system with the version in the update.

Well lo and behold! That was my problem. Funny how I couldn't figure that one out myself. Thanks for the tip.
