Hello all,
I'm using the Kyma system live (or rather about to) and I've been collecting my sounds into a compiled sound grid. I've encountered a few problems and I'd like to ask for assistance: Does anyone know if (and how) one can compile a timeline sound and put it in the sound grid?
Secondly, do you ever have to recompile the sounds in the grid if nothing changes? It appears that I have to recompile at least every boot up.
Thirdly, after recompiling, checking the "on" box, and sending a program change the sound in the grid takes an awfully long time to load. I assumed it would be extremely quick to load; I'd like to end one song send a program change in the click off for the next song and trigger the sound on the first beat. Has anyone used it like this?
Thanks for you feedback,
Cliff
Has anyone else noticed the above?

I doubt that you can put a Timeline into a Compiled Grid - but it is a good idea.

I haven't had a "re-compile" problem as you describe - if you haven't edited anything, you shouldn't have to re-compile.

My sounds load pretty fast, but they are not as fast as a synth program change - still it seems like your plan should work.

Hi Cliff

I don't think you can get a compleate timline into a grid to compile, but if you want to use just one of the timebars that you found in a timeline, then you can double click on the bar and then drag the right most module into an empty sound file. You can then treat it as any other kyma sound.

forgive me if you already knew this.

Hey Cliff,

I use Kyma live with grids all the time so here's the info I have ...

No you can't put a timeline in a grid, I wish!

My understanding of the grid behavior (could have it wrong)from the folks at SSC is:

1) the sounds don't change instantaneously, you have to wait for the sound to download to the capy, which takes time, also you may need to wait for some vcs loading activity, which depending on your os and computer and interface (really not sure about this) can vary.

2) Those grids are overzealous, you don't have to recompile unless things change, but they're always asking you to save changes and whatnot even when it's unnecessary

On the other hand, you can precompile a timeline with all your songs and use it for the whole show, but then you can't jump around using MIDI program changes, so you are committing to a set list (sortof)

Thanks All!
that gives me some ideas to try:
Multiple timelines that group x number of songs
Also, I bet if I put another disk drive in that holds all my Kyma Stuff (maybe even install on this disk) I can escape all the paging overhead and whatnot on the disk that came with this beater PC!
Heck, I might even talk to my audience between songs.......nah. :P
I'll post my final setup ....
Thanks Again,
Cliff

Samples used in Sounds take up the majority of the time for the downloading of compiled Sounds. Perhaps there are some long samples that you could play directly off of the disk rather than out of RAM?
