if one hits the red record button in the tape recorder tools, the file in the filename field gets zeroed immediately.
also i know this i accidently killed a quite imortant recording this way.

i have the feeling that one of the upgrades to v5.2 which i use had this eliminated (or do i have to check a checkbox???)

apart from that i sometimes have half second long holes in my recordings made thru kyma running on g3 400 pb. with an old pcmcia card.
i guess this wonīt come up with flame, i just donīt have money to invest right now.....

thx
michael

record.pci

Here is a new version of the tape recorder tool that confirms whether you want to overwrite a file that you just recorded. This should help prevent you from losing important recordings

Put this new tool in place of the old one in the Tools folder of the Program folder in the Kyma folder. Macintosh users will need to do a File | Import to the tool before being able to use it.

I'm having problems using this file... I have imported it into kyma - which then alters its file/creator type. I restart Kyma but get the error message : ERROR this collection is empty. I'm on a mac btw

Could you please make this feature ("want to replace file?") part of the DiskRecorder Sound also?

Donīt know how many times Iīve forgotten to give a new name in DiskRecorder before compiling the Sound--and, whoops, there it is Not.

Most likely the file was corrupted when it was downloaded from the Internet. You can check if this is true by removing the file from the Tools folder, starting Kyma, and then trying to open the file directly in Kyma using Open from the File menu.

From looking through the code for the tools, this error could come up if the file has one or more trailing NULLs (0 character code) appended to the end.

We think this might be an internet browser problem. Could people tell us which browser (and the version) they are using and whether they were successfully able to download and use the tool?

We are able to download it using Microsoft Explorer on the Macintosh (version 5.1).

I've found the problem and solution for the record.pci download....

I compared the downloaded file with the original working record.pci file, and found that the downloaded version (tried Netscape 6, Netscape 4.75 : Mac and Explorer 5.50: PC) gets additional data placed at the beginning of the file.

If you delete the heading text up until "BOSS 980000" the file is then usable. (I used BBEdit for this on a Mac)

Thank you Andrew!! For the legwork and the workaround!

We are not sure why the browsers you tried are adding data to the beginning of the file, but we have checked the code and the only thing that could cause a problem (which has been fixed for the next update) would be extra data added to the end of the file. Could it be that your editor removed trailing zeroes from the file when you saved it?

The fakekey.pci has also a problem.
After I remove new .pci files from tools folder
and opening them from File > open File command,
they could work.

this could be an easy temporal solution:
when one compiles the diskRecorder sound, a message comes up asking you how many beats you want to hear in advance of the start of the recording.
couldnīt this file dialog be rewriten asking you if you are shure to record over the sample with this special filePath.

the best would be anyway, that DiskRecorder asks you during the compiling which filepath the recording should have....

when it gets hot during production the chance of forgetting to insert a new FileName is enormously big.

thanks!

Andrew or Yasuski, could you please attach one of the non-working tools to an email and send it to us? (For some reason, when we download them the tools, they always work so we don't have a way to see what's going on).

Thanks!

record-5.50.4134.0600.pci

record-netscape-475.pci

Included are the record.pci files downloaded from Explorer and Netscape on a PC, the same effect occurred on my Mac too, they are renamed by me not the browser btw! - both have the additional data as a header before the text "BOSS...." begins.

I know this problem cropped up before (a year?) but don't remember how or if it was resolved.

As a suggestion, it might be worth trying uploading the files in an 'internet safe' format such as a StuffIt or Zip archive - both PC and Mac clients have software to unpack these file types....

record.sit

I just realised I could try the StuffIt idea myself.... so here is the record.pci file as a StuffIt archive uploaded. Will then download it to see whether it still gets mangled or not..!

Seems a lot better - after downloading and unpacking the file with StuffIt expander, the file is still in pristine condition after bumping around through switches and hubs and hurtling through thousands of miles of copper and fibre, from Illinois to Frankfurt, Germany!

NewTools.sit

NewTools.zip

Here are the two tools: FakeKey and Record in both ZIP and StuffIt formats.
